According to Xcode 12.1, the iPhone 12 Mini will have a 2.88x retina screen and render at the same 375 x 812 logical resolution as the 11 Pro, X, and Xs. That’s a similar approach as the 6 Plus took. I suspect most people will neither know nor care.

iPhone logical resolutions, ordered
iPhone virtual screen resolutions with a 2.16:1 ratio, ordered from smallest to largest:
12 Mini: 360 x 780
12 Mini, 11 Pro, X, Xs: 375 x 812
12, 12 Pro: 390 x 844
11, 11 Pro Max, Xr, Xs Max: 414 x 896
12 Pro Max: 428 x 926
So the 3 new phone resolutions slot around the 2 previous ones (Update: except for the 12 Mini, which will have the same logical resolution as the 11 Pro, X, and Xs despite having a different physical resolution)
iPhone 12 screen ratios
All iPhone 12 models have the same 2.16 ratio as previous Face ID phones. Which means the new phones (except maybe mini) will probably support at least one level of display zoom. Now that there are 5 4 virtual resolutions at this ratio, I wonder if larger phones might support two.
iPhone logical resolutions
iPhone screen resolutions (in points):
12 Pro Max: 428 x 926
12/12 Pro: 390 x 844
12 Mini: 360 x 780 375 x 812 (virtualized)
11/11 Pro Max: 414 x 896
11 Pro: 375 x 812
SE: 320 x 568
iPhone 12 resolutions
Hmmm… so the iPhone 12 screens will be 360, 390, and 428 virtual points wide? After 13 years of iPhone Apple just doubles the number virtual phone screen widths?
Thoughts on Touch Bar
Anybody else constantly fat fingering the Touch Bar on their MacBook Pro while typing? I do it all the time, and it’s seriously annoying.
iMac desk
Only had to disassemble about half of the LEGO Space base to fit my iMac. (iMac’s old location is now dedicated to my new work machine.)
16″ MBP
I finally have one of those new-fangled 16” MBP’s. I must admit: TouchID is nice, as is the screen. (My personal laptop is the last of the 12” MacBooks.)
Monitor recommendations
I’ve been spoiled by a 27″ 5K iMac as primary monitor for the past 2.5 years. What monitor should I get to pair with a 16″ MacBook Pro? (I really wish I could just use the iMac in Target Display Mode.)
Crypto Tech in Zug
I attended a meetup in Zug tonight on using tokenization and distributed ledger technologies to help attain sustainable development goals.
This was the second meetup in a month on using crypto currency tech to effect positive change in the world. Very interesting stuff.
I love that there is a community here that is engaged in having these discussions. The technology is still in its infancy.
Clarification: I think sh*tcoin mining is the devil’s work, and I think there’s a huge crypto currency bubble waiting to burst.
But remember how it felt in 2008 when the App Store launched? Or in the late 90’s with the web? That’s crypto tech in Switzerland now.
