Training hike, Niederrickenbach: 5.1km, 640m ascent, 2h, 17°C. Short but relatively steep. We bought local sheep milk cheese at the top and then took the gondola down (our first use of public transportation since COVID happened— there was one other passenger, we all wore masks).
Statuses
Neuheim sky
Sun rays peeping through the clouds over Neuheim (there should have been a heavenly choir vocalizing)
Josefsgütsch hike
Training hike, Josefsgütsch and around the Baarburg: 8.3km, 270m ascent, 2h10m, 18°C. Easy but pleasant walk through forest and farm fields. Rain threatened but never materialized.
NEOWISE pic 2
Tonight’s NEOWISE Night Mode pic. Although clearly visible with binoculars, with my naked eye I can only see the tail in my peripheral vision. It’s the weirdest thing: a smudge in the sky seen out of the corner of my eye, but when I look directly at it, it fades away.
John Lewis: Good Trouble
This evening we watched the documentary, John Lewis: Good
Trouble. What a remarkable person. Recommended.
Albishorn hike
Third training hike today, the Albishorn with its view of Lake Zürich: 8.4km, 460m ascent, 2h40m, 24°C.
NEOWISE pic
Finally able to see comet NEOWISE tonight. Light pollution still a problem but at least the clouds cleared and it was high enough in the sky to be seen despite our being in a valley. (It blows my mind that I can capture this image with a cellphone.)
Hochwacht view
Today’s view from the Hochwacht (normally you can see two lakes)
Hochwacht hike
Second training hike, on a rainy day— Zugerberg Hochwacht: 8.3km, 300m ascent, 2h10m, 12°C.
In Training
(We’re getting in shape for a 3 day/2 night excursion in August to the high alpine valleys of the Urbachtal region of Switzerland. We’ll get to help care for horses and a flock of 1,100 sheep!)
