I’m happy to pay for tools/software, but I don’t want recurring costs (apart from domain name + hosting) for the site itself. (So not Squarespace, for example.)

I want to build a simple (single page to start) website for someone. I’d like to use this as a learning opportunity for myself and my son. I’d appreciate recommendations of tools/software/services to use.
