I wiped out skiing this morning (accidentally went off-piste into deep, loose snow) and a passing middle-schooler asked me if I was ok. Faith in humanity restored. (I’m fine.)
Month: January 2019
Morning ski (Sattel)
Morning mountain: I skipped my hiking group’s snowshoe hike in favor of some relaxed skiing at Sattel. I still need to build up endurance in my thighs…

This being Switzerland, no one stopped to ask if I needed help or asked if I was ok. (To be fair I never felt like I was in any danger, and I don’t know what sort of help could have been offered, and I had a phone to call for help if needed.)
Ski misadventure
I would be remiss if I didn’t recount yesterday’s ski misadventure: While skiing at our smallish local resort, I fell off the T-Bar at perhaps the worst possible point and had to spend an hour struggling through deep snow to get back on-piste.
Oberjoch selfie
Chairlift selfie heading up to the Oberjoch (I love that name).
Grindelwald ski
Excellent afternoon ski lesson at Grindelwald First. 2.5h = 3 long runs. The first serious skiing of the season. I hope the weather holds so that we can repeat tomorrow morning.
Sattel ski
Morning mountain: more relaxed skiing at Sattel. This time I made some longer runs.
Sattel vs Sattel
View from Sattel top station last Friday vs today. Yeah the weather looked a lot nicer last week, but there’s more snow now.
Sattel ski
Morning mountain: some low-key skiing at Sattel. Practically had the mountain to myself this morning!
Hiking Group: Gottschalkenberg
8 January 2019
5km, 150m ascent, 1h30m, 0°C
The first snowshoe hike of the season (and my first snowshoe hike ever). Snowshoes were one of my Christmas gifts this year. The weather was pretty miserable: foggy, windy, snowing wet snow, and it felt colder than just freezing. Nevertheless it was still a fun hike and a successful first outing on showshoes for me.
We did a simple out and back hike from Raten, past Gottschalkenberg to Bellevue (supposedly the view point but it was fogged in). This hike could have been a loop around Gottschalkenberg, but due to the weather we decided to just retrace our steps to Raten. (Returning was easier because the snow was already tramped down.)
